Overview The Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) in Washington, D.C. is one of two retirement communities (the other being in Gulfport, Mississippi) operated by the U.S. federal government to provide housing, healthcare, and support services for retired and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Located on a sprawling 272-acre campus in northwest Washington, D.C., the facility offers a peaceful, scenic environment with historic significance and modern amenities for eligible veterans. History Established in 1851, the AFRH-Washington has a rich history, originally serving as a sanctuary for aging and disabled veterans. The campus was built on land once owned by George Washington’s family and later acquired by the federal government. Key historic structures on the grounds include the Grant Building, named after President Ulysses S. Grant, who supported veterans' welfare. Eligibility Requirements To qualify for residency at AFRH-Washington, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: Served 20+ years in the U.S. Armed Forces (active duty or Reserves/National Guard with active federal service). Disabled in the line of duty and receiving military retirement pay. Former enlisted service members who served during a war period, were honorably discharged, and are unable to earn a livelihood due to injury or disability. Female veterans who served as nurses or in other military roles during certain conflicts.
