Originating in 1970 from a repurposed church building, it became Minnesota’s first free medical clinic, serving a richly diverse, immigrant-heavy community. Today, this Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) offers a holistic range of integrated services across two neighborhood sites: Primary medical care: From pediatric wellness to geriatric chronic-disease management, reproductive health, acute care, immunizations, cancer, and STI screenings. Behavioral health: Counseling and mental-health support integrated into primary care. Dental services: Preventive care, X-rays, fillings, extractions, root-canals, crowns, and walk-in emergency appointments. Supportive programs: Low-cost pharmaceuticals, lab and X‑ray services, specialist referrals, transportation assistance, and patient navigation. Health Commons: A drop-in wellness hub (open weekdays 11 am–1 pm) offering nutritional education, fitness classes, screenings, massage, and culturally responsive programs—completely free. Community outreach: Initiatives like the Hooyo prenatal support project for Somali mothers, Augsburg University partnerships, food pantries, diaper programs, and culturally-tailored creative health workshops.
